But in the end, it’s worth it.

Goldsmith writes: “Earning your life is not free. You pay in terms of time, commitment, focus, and more. But when you are fulfilled, will you be looking at the price of your efforts? We are willing to pay the price when there’s a high probability that our efforts will achieve success, far less eager when the probability is low. We want certainty that our effort and sacrifice will not be in vain. We are terrorized by the prospect of putting everything we have into achieving a goal and ending up with nothing to show for it. Total commitment shouldn’t be a futile gesture, we think. It’s not fair. So we avoid paying that price. No commitment, no futility.”

In a war-torn country there is hope. Ukraine’s National Opera recently reopened in Kyiv. Even as Russia’s military makes advances in the country’s east, Ukraine citizens are defiantly being seen as returning to life as normal. Kyiv was surrounded by Russian soldiers until early April, when they retreated. Restaurants and stores have slowly reopened in recent weeks, and theater is coming back too. People are striving to live their lives as they see fit.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories.

Nashville, TN (Newsworthy.ai) Monday Mar 13, 2023 @ 9:00 AM Pacific —
In a blog post related to living in the present, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how it’s necessary to live in the present and deal with what you have in the moment, in order to move forward in life.

Goldsmith writes, “The Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman famously said, ‘What you see is all there is,’ which spawned a widely adopted acronym WYSIATI, to point out how quickly we use the limited information at our disposal to make premature conclusions. I prefer to apply WYSIATI as a reminder that every set of facts we see is situational—and there’s something noble in dealing as best we can with what’s in front of us. When golfers play the shot in front of them, they are being supremely rational and disinterested (that is, neutral), divorced from past or future concerns that may cloud their judgment. They accept that golf, like most of life, is situational, never involving the moment before or after, only now. At their best, they are Buddhist masters of mindfulness and being present. The enormous value of being present shouldn’t be a controversial idea. And yet failing to play the shot is one of our most consistent behavior patterns.”

Participants at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, are facing a new reality. Many of its values — globalization, liberalism, free market capitalism, representative democracy — are under attack. The coronavirus pandemic prompted isolationism among certain foreign leaders, showed that the global supply chain is weak and built a wall between the world and China. What’s more, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created a fear of broader global conflict. Not to mention internal divisions that are straining countries from the U.S. to Hungary. Leaders must face these challenges before they can confidently explore future growth.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.

You can read Marshall Goldsmith’s blog here.

About MARSHALL GOLDSMITH

Marshall Goldsmith has been recognized for years as the world’s leading executive coach and the New York Times bestselling author of many books, including What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, Mojo, and Triggers. There’s no mystery to how we form a good habit. It’s a well-researched behavioral concept these days, commonly described as a three-step sequence of Stimulus, Response, and Outcome. My teachers in graduate school referred to it as the ABC sequence, for Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence. I’ve heard others describe it as the Cause-Action-Effect sequence. Whatever the nomenclature, only the middle part of the sequence matters: our response (or behavior or action). That’s the part we can control and change. If we respond poorly every time to the same stimulus, we shouldn’t be surprised that we get the same disappointing outcome each time. Eventually, our poor response becomes predictable — we’ve acquired another poor habit. The only way to eliminate the new habit is to consciously change our response to the unchanging stimulus with better behavior.”

Kylian Mbappé, the renowned young French soccer star, has decided to remain with Paris Saint-Germain. He signed a new contract, one of the richest in soccer history, that will keep the French player at the club for the next three years. Paris Saint-Germain apparently offered a better contract than that which Réal Madrid had made to Mbappé. Its offer included a signing bonus of almost $140 million, a net salary of more than $26 million every season and complete control over his image rights. Now Mbappé will receive a higher base salary, among others. The Mbappé deal comes while the player is also building his off-field brand and creating his own profile.

In achieving an earned life, you are constantly becoming someone new. Before you can effectively earn the next phase of your life, you have to disengage from the old phase that you claim to have left behind. You not only have to let go of past achievements (you are not the person who earned those achievements, that is, you have become someone new), you also have to relinquish your old identity and way of doing things. It’s okay to learn from our past, but I don’t recommend going back to visit every day.”

The newly reelected French President Emmanuel Macron is seeking to leave a bit of his past behind, as his new administration has named several fresh faces as ministers. France’s new government mixes veteran politicians from President Macron’s prior administration with newcomers in key ministries, including education and diplomacy. In addition, President Macron named Élisabeth Borne, former labor and environment minister, as prime minister — she is only the second woman to be prime minister in France, a break from the past where the majority in government were men.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. We have the opportunity to be empathic dozens of times a day—and each time is an opportunity to display empathy either well or poorly. If you’ve ever come home and neglected your family members because you were still preoccupied with the empathic emotions you felt upon listening to a colleague’s problems, you’ve seen the hazards of empathy overdone or done poorly.”

More than one million Americans — and probably many more — have died of Covid, according to a recent news report from the New York Times. This is a higher rate of death from Covid-19 than any other country has seen, at least officially speaking. At the same time, many Americans are willing to meet unmasked in groups, to do away with precautions, and simply to “live” with the virus. The question is how to deal with people who have lost loved ones? Do we just forget them? That’s a big question of empathy — and the covid pandemic has shown how far our empathy can go, according to some observers.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. A customer is much more than someone who pays for your product or service. It changes with each situation. Sometimes it resembles the empathy of understanding, other times the empathy of feeling, caring, or doing. The only constant with singular empathy is how it concentrates our attention on a single moment and therefore makes it singular for all involved. When you demonstrate singular empathy, you cannot be inauthentic. You are not disrespecting other people from other previous moments in your life, immediate or long ago. You are demonstrating empathy to the only people who can appreciate it: the people who are with you now.”

As more people rely on social media for news, they are becoming increasingly divided from their neighbors, as these platforms foment a lack of empathy in creating an “other” for someone with a different point of view. And there has been a widespread dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. This has led to a true lack of empathy among the population.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories.
Many workers and businesses are struggling with the decision to return to office full or part-time. Marshall Goldsmith weighs how businesses can improve efficiencies by listening to employees.

Nashville, TN (Newsworthy.ai) Tuesday Jul 12, 2022 @ 7:00 AM Pacific —
In a blog post related to productive business meetings, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about some of the ways businesses can improve efficiencies, including through a streamlined meeting known as a Business Plan Review.

Goldsmith writes, “I adopted the Business Plan Review from the way that former Ford CEO Alan Mulally structured weekly meetings. It involved a fixed time and day, mandatory attendance, five minutes to report progress, traffic-light colors (red, yellow, green) to grade status updates, no judgment, no cynicism, and other rules. I saw that the BPR was grounded in a piercing understanding of people. The BPR made everyone accountable to both themselves and the group. This met their dual need for internal validation and belonging to something greater than themselves.”

Choices can be difficult, especially in the age of Covid. Many businesses are struggling with how and when to ask employees to return to the office, after they’ve successfully worked remotely for the last couple of years. Apple recently suspended its requirement that employees return to the office this month for at least three days a week because of a resurgence of Covid-19 cases.

A few weeks ago, a group of Apple employees published a letter urging the company to allow for a hybrid and flexible work schedule. Many other companies are weighing the risks of allowing employees to work from home or insist they return to the office, at least a few days a week. Mandatory corporate policies are becoming more divisive these days, and companies have to adjust to a new reality.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. They could reveal that all of us have similar problems. And, most important, in the right environment, such as these weekends with a small group session featuring a gathering of people of varied backgrounds but similar situations, they are willing to open up and share their problems, their insights, ask questions, and hear advice from people like them.”

Figuring out next steps is always difficult, especially for people who’ve had long experience and success. Bloomberg Media introduced a venture called Bloomberg UK, which will compete directly with The Financial Times and The Sunday Times, long-running British business journals. Bloomberg is going after a British audience in a big way after being in the British market for 30 years. Over the years, as I’ve incorporated such concepts and activities into my coaching as the referent group, the notion of feedforward, stakeholder-centered coaching, the business plan review, and the ‘what’s next’ weekend, I’ve also found that daily questions are a powerful way to keep people on track. The fact is, we are superior planners and inferior doers. Daily Questions is the tool I picked up a decade and a half ago to deal with my repeating pattern of well-meaning intention followed by unreliable execution.”

Many middle-aged people who took early retirement during the pandemic have returned to the office. They have realized that they were not quite ready to leave the workforce. Millions of older Americans have returned — about 64% percent of adults between the ages of 55 and 64 were working as of April, about the same rate as in February 2020. For many people, early retirement was never an option, and, even as Covid in different variations has resurfaced, a need to work has become stronger than a fear of falling ill. These people have asked themselves what matters, and it’s a matter of livelihood.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. Whereas feedback comprises people’s opinion of your past behavior, feedforward represents other people’s ideas that you should be using in the future.”

Russia and Ukraine are waging a war on the ground and a war of information. The soldier is accused of killing a civilian, and the trial has taken on added symbolic resonance as an effort to hold the Russians accountable on accusations of war crimes before the world. You need a strategy anchored in both self-awareness and situational awareness to sustain the urgency and avoid burnout — until earning has become your habit. In the course of a lifetime, you will experience episodes when one phase of your life ends and another begins. Beware two situations in particular. The first is when you are ashamed to seek help because doing so will expose your ignorance or incompetence. The teaching professional at a golf club once told me that fewer than 20% of the 300 members at her club had ever taken a lesson from her. They were too embarrassed by their faulty swing to let her help them. ‘I pay my bills giving lessons to the 30 or 40 best golfers at the club,’ she said. ‘They only want to shoot better scores. They don’t care how they got there or who helped them. Their scorecard doesn’t care, either.’ The second situation begins when you tell yourself, ‘I should be able to do this on my own.’ You fall into this trap when the task you’re facing is adjacent to knowledge or a skill you think you already possess.”

The often-conflicting nations of Europe have come together in the face of Russian aggression. The latest is a collective plan to wean themselves off dependence on Russian oil and gas. The European Union just released a $317 billion plan aimed at ending its dependence on Russian energy within five years. The European countries plan to cooperate to negotiate gas supply deals from producers in the U.S., the Middle East, and Africa to replace energy from Russia. The countries are also funding an expansion of projects for renewable energy. Russia’s invasion has intensified pressure on Europe to work together to shift away from fossil fuels — to ask for help from each other.

The Golden Rule, by definition, works both ways, never more so than when help is on the table. An even more meaningful question: How have you felt when you have helped others? It harkened back to a paradox I noticed at IBM: The company’s leaders thought coaching was valuable for employees, but not for themselves. This was nonsense, of course. None of us is perfect. We’re all flawed human beings. We all should be asking for help. My breakthrough was reminding my accomplished clients of this eternal truth.”

French President Emmanuel Macron is not known for asking for help. But he is becoming more likely to think that way before parliamentary elections. After winning a second term, he remade his government. Now it blends high-profile dignitaries with conservatives from his previous administration in a push to rebuild his bipartisan coalition ahead of parliamentary elections. Among the choices are Catherine Colonna, France’s ambassador to the U.K., who became foreign minister and who worked in the administration of late conservative President Jacques Chirac to become the country’s top diplomat. French historian Pap Ndiaye, a left-leaning academic and an expert in Black studies and racial discrimination, was named education minister, one of the largest jobs in the administration. The French president is seeking to broaden his appeal after drifting rightward.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. If financial security is your top priority, you check your net worth every day. If you’re serious about losing weight, you step on a scale each morning. If you have stomach issues, you measure the composition of your gut biome. Not every measurement that matters to us has to be a hard, objective number. Soft, subjective numbers can be just as meaningful. Encouragement and measurement are part of an earned life.”

By any measure, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has altered the world’s priorities, especially in terms of the energy and economic sectors. The European Union just released a plan to end the region’s dependence on Russian energy within five years, in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia supplies about 40% of the EU’s gas, about 25% of its oil, and half of its coal. It's an ambitious plan, but its proponents feel that this plan to reduce its dependence on Russia for its energy is achievable, as well as necessary.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. Empathy is the act of experiencing what other people are feeling or thinking. A German philosopher created the term in 1873 from the word Einfühlung, for ‘feeling into,’ and that’s how we think of it nowadays: We feel our way into other people’s emotions and situations. One of the most important qualities of living an earned life is building positive relationships.”

As more workers return to the office, many are questioning whether they want to return at all — not for health reasons, but for reasons of a lack of empathy. For minorities, a driving factor in not returning is that by working remotely they can avoid the unconscious microaggressions from unthinking coworkers. More employees today are speaking up about workplace slights, and workplace trainers and diversity consultants push to address the snubs in sensitivity training, which involves understanding empathy and also encouraging empathetic thinking. .

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. What life is earned if you are alone? Community comprises all the people in your life. Even if you are compliant in what you do, accountable to yourself and others, follow up to ensure you’re doing what you set out to do and measure the results, you still need a community to nurture you.”

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen recently urged the European community to increase spending to support Ukraine, as Russia’s attacks on the country’s critical infrastructure continued. Europe and the U.S. have worked together to enact sanctions against Russia in the nearly three months since Russian President Vladimir V. Putin ordered an invasion. But they have been less aligned on the need to help prop up Ukraine’s economy and to assist with its rebuilding once the war ends. The U.S. Congress has already approved a $13.6 billion emergency spending package for Ukraine and is expected to approve another $40 billion worth of aid. While the European Union and international financial institutions have also been making large aid contributions, Ms. Yellen said that more must be done. No one but you can paint that vision. The influential people in your life may offer the intellectual and emotional tools to help you choose a wise path. But in the end, the choice is yours alone to make.”

Russia’s energy plans are stalled because of its decision to invade Ukraine. Russia’s $21 billion project known as Arctic LNG 2 for gas liquefaction is unlikely to be completed. As a result of Russia’s aggression, the project’s key international backer, TotalEnergies, recently wrote off its $4.1 billion investment. Russia is likely to be forced into retreat for many other energy projects. Future growth for its oil and gas exports, which have driven the company’s economy, are now uncertain.
