The opening caps a year of work for owner Kelli Hull, taking the store from a cold, dark concrete shell to a fully built-out boutique stocked with national designer brands and answering a question she first asked herself as a frustrated shopper: why was there nowhere nearby to buy contemporary designer clothing without a 45-minute drive into San Antonio?

"I kept hearing from other women that they had the same frustrations I did," Hull said. "On Thursday, that changes. We can't wait to open the doors and finally show everyone what we've built."

What to expect on opening day

The festivities begin early with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and a confetti pop at 9:30 a.m., followed by the doors officially opening to the public at 10 a.m. Shoppers will be among the first to walk the floor of the roughly 1,200-square-foot boutique and browse an assortment built so there is "something for everybody," including household contemporary names and emerging designers customers won't find anywhere else in the area. Hull and her team will be on hand to greet guests, offer styling help, and introduce the brands and experiences that set Monkee's apart. The store carries a curated mix Hull assembled on buying trips that took her all the way to showrooms in New York City. Younger shoppers have been "over the moon," Hull said, about Aviator Nation, the brightly colored Malibu, California sweat-and-swimwear label. "People are a little bit frustrated with a lack of customer service, not only in retail but in industries at large," Hull said. "We want every single person who comes in to feel a very elevated, experiential shopping experience." That means a glass of wine on the couch with girlfriends, head-to-toe personal styling, private after-hours events, and Sunday appointments for busy customers who can't make it in during the week.

It also comes with a promise. "It is my solemn vow that I'll never let anyone leave Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch in something that doesn't look phenomenal on them," Hull said. "When you look good, you feel good, and that projects out."

One recent morning, a sales rep drove down from Dallas and rolled racks of clothing right into Hull's home to preview merchandise arriving for late-fall holiday and into January 2027. "We just started rolling racks of clothes and I started picking pieces out for the future," Hull said. "It was personal shopping."

Curated by data, not just by love

"In fashion, we get emotional about it - I have this feeling, and it's so beautiful, and I love it, and maybe the data doesn't support that," Hull said. "To have a buyer say, 'That's good - let's tiptoe into the water on this brand, make some safe bets, and if everybody loves it, we can get more,' has been phenomenal. Otherwise we'd all have a tendency to go a little hog wild, because it's very hard to say no to a piece you love."

The result, she says, is an assortment that is broad enough to serve women of all ages yet curated enough to feel personal - the difference between Monkee's and the limited contemporary options that exist in the area today.

When Kelli Hull moved back to Texas after almost two decades in Washington, D.C., she ran into a problem familiar to a lot of Hill Country women: there was nowhere nearby to buy contemporary designer clothing. Coming home to Texas

A native Texan who grew up all over the state and graduated from Texas A&M University, Hull left for Washington, D.C. after college and spent nearly 20 years in government contracting, advising private companies on doing business with the special operations and intelligence communities. She met her husband, Chris, an Army Reserve officer, in D.C. About a year ago the family moved home to Texas, built a house, and sent a child off to college - and Hull eventually traded the weekly commute back to D.C. for a life fully rooted in the Hill Country.
